Research has shown that people who walk dogs show more improvement in fitness than people who walk with a human companion.
Dear Somerville Dog Owners and Friends of Somerville Dogs,
Let's win the Mayor's Fitness Challenge!
I am looking for nine other Somerville dog owners who want to win this challenge to join me and Team som|dog in the team competition of the citywide fitness challenge this Spring--just in time for swimsuit season! If you are interested
let me know before Saturday, March 20, and come to the health and wellness fair at the Somerville High School gymnasium on Saturday, March 20th from noon to 5pm to weigh in.
(Note: Dogs are not allowed in the gymnasium; please make other arrangements for your canine companions.)
Our competition will be other ten-member teams comprising city employees, schools, community leaders and the public. Team members (both individually and for the team) earn points for individual weight loss and changes in their Body Mass Index (BMI) and by participating in listed city
events. (We're working with the City on getting an event for people with dogs included on the list of events.)
There will be
prizes for individuals and teams that lose the most weight, improve their BMI the most or collect the most points. Everyone who participates gets a Shape Up Somerville Fitness Buck, which is redeemable at many locations throughout the City, such as local gyms and exercise studios, markets, and participating restaurants.
Winners of the individuals/team challenge will be announced on May 22, 2010 at a fabulous outdoor event where dogs that are leashed and licensed and that enjoy the company of other dogs will be welcome!
More information about the
Mayor's Fitness Challenge is available online from the City of Somerville.
RSVP if you are interested joining me and Team som|dog in the Mayor's Fitness Challenge!
Cheers,
Michele

Volunteers Needed!
With the Mayor's Fitness Challenge Kick-Off Health and Wellness Fair less than a week away, we need people to help staff our table in the Somerville High School Gym. If you can spend an hour or so at our table,
please contact me. It's a great opportunity to learn more about what we do and to help promote Somerville dog owners as the likeable civic-minded folks that we are!
P.P.S.
Dog-walking GroupsThere is interest within the community in organizing a dog-walking group or groups. If you are interested in participating in a dog-walking group, or if you would like more information,
please contact me before March 20.
