Paws to Vote August 30, 2005

paws to vote.PNGToday is the Special State Election for the 2nd Middlesex District senate seat. Voters in Ward One Precinct One and Ward Two Precinct One are not in this district and will not be voting. Polls are open 7am to 8pm.

The City of Somerville Election Department allows voters to bring our dogs with us to the polls: dogs must be on leash, remain close to their companions at all times and must not bother others.

Golf, anyone?

The Somerville Youth Soccer League is practicing in Nunziato Field, Tuesdays through Fridays between 4:30 and 7:00 p.m. The season continues through October (and into November if it is necessary to reschedule games due to weather).

I enjoy seeing the kids practicing in Numziato Field, as Strummer and I walk by on our way home from work. I've been wondering, however, why they are always practicing on the sloped Putnam Street side of the field rather than on the relatively level area on the Vinal Street side of the field.

Now I know. There's a huge hole in ground in the area in front of the football goal post.

Holes are dangerous. When you're running after a ball or running after your playmates, you could seriously hurt yourself by tripping in a hole.

Somerville Recreation Survey

Tell the City that families with dogs need parks, too!

The Somerville Recreation Department wants to know what would you like to see changed about playgrounds or parks in your neighborhood. It's the seventh question on their online survey. Tell them that Somerville needs both open spaces where dogs are not allowed for activities that do not include dogs, and open spaces where families can enjoy safe and legal off-leash recreation. Tell them that Somerville's dogs will be better behaved, and Somerville's dog owners will be more responsible, when we have safe and legal off-leash recreational areas in our neighborhoods. A tired dog is a good dog!

Tell them that the "No Dogs Allowed" signs at every park in the City are not very neighborly. Responsible dog owners appreciate that children's play areas should be off-limits to dogs, but most parks in the City can accommodate families with leashed dogs.

Tell them that you would like to see the Recreation Department offer dog recreation, responsible dog owner training and dog safety programs. Suggest that the Somerville Dog Owners Group could help to establish and administer such programs.

If you don't have children, you can complete the Somerville Recreation Survey in less than two minutes!

Pet Rock

petrock.JPGLast year, when I took Strummer to pet rock, she "thought she had died and gone to doggie heaven."

On Sunday, September 11, we're looking forward to seeing our friends, Greyhound Welfare and Poodle Rescue of New England at Pet Rock at Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester. Strummer's especially looking forward to seeing her friend from the Educated Ferret Association...

message board cracked

The Somerville Dog Owners Group Forum, the first, albeit virtual, dog park in Somerville, MA, was cracked recently. I apologize to all for the inconvenience, for which, due to my failure to upgrade the board software to the latest version, I take full responsibility.

With a lot of help from the the technical support staff at WestHost, I have upgraded the board to the latest version and have gotten the board and most of the data back online.

If you are one of sixteen people who registered on the message board between May 29 and September 5, 2005, I regret that your user profile, including your username, has been lost. Also, at least one post to the board—hilby's request for recommendations for local pet-sitting services— was lost. Again, I am very sorry about the loss of data. I hope everyone whose username was lost will register again, and I hope that everyone will continue to enjoy using the message board.
