The Dog Walker's "Diet"

via "Renaissance Poodles" Poodle Rescue of New England Newsletter - Autumn 2006

A new study at the University of Missouri-Columbia has found that having a pet can encourage owners to get more exercise and results in more weight loss than most nationally known diet plans. . . .

"The results of the first group were wonderful. . . . By the end of the study, all the participants were walking for longer periods of time and walking for daily errands instead of using some other type of transportation.

"In addition, two of the participants made a trip to the humane society to adopt animals, and several began volunteering to walk the dogs at the shelter. Many of them told us that they didn't necessarily walk in the study because they knew it was good for their health; they enjoyed walking because they knew it was good for the animals."

Read about the study on line at the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Veterinary Medicine website: "Daily Dog Walks Work Off Weight for Owners, MU Researchers Find."

One man's trash

Addressing the problem of dog waste in the streets of New York, Stephen J. Dubner and Steven D. Levitt, authors of the Freakonomics column in The New York Times Magazine want to know: "How do we deal with the occasional miscreant who fails to scoop?" ("Dog-Waste Management," October 2, 2005)

In San Fransisco, irresponsible dog owners may soon create a niche for entrepreneurial collectors: the city is interested in a program that would recycle pet waste into methane "to power a turbine to make electricity or to heat homes," according to Reuters ("Dog poop--the next alternative energy source?" February 22, 2006,").

Somerville Animal Control

You know that there is a forum for posting lost and found dogs on the Somerville Dog Owners Group's website. April Terrio, the City of Somerville's Animal Control Officer (ACO) often posts pets that have been turned in to her on the lost and found forum. There is also a forum exclusively for the ACO to post pets that are available for adoption from the City.

But did you know that April also posts lost and and found pets and pets available for adoption on the Animal Control page on the City's website? Check it out!
